Client Overview
South East Water supplies high-quality drinking water to 2.2 million people across the South East of England. In addition to their water supply services, they take pride in their role as environmental guardians, diligently working to safeguard and enhance the environment for future generations.
Project Scope
Fourfeet was commissioned to develop the AquaSmart water-saving initiative for South East Water. Designed to be delivered in schools for children aged five to seven (Key Stage One), the initiative aimed to educate pupils about how small changes in their homes and schools can conserve water and contribute to environmental protection.
The educational resources included engaging ‘missions’ and downloadable content to make learning fun.
Campaign Design
Collaborating closely with the South East Water team, we conceived a campaign built around three dynamic water-saving heroes – Kai, Isla, and Nero – known as the Aquanauts. These custom-illustrated characters underwent multiple rounds of age-appropriate feedback and user testing before being introduced to the world.
We developed a visual identity for the Aquanauts’ world that was sympathetic to the wider South East Water brand while keeping the focus on delighting the target Key Stage One audience.
The project also called on Fourfeet to devise and design the AquaSmart ‘missions’ – a suite of 16 age-appropriate activities. The activities encompassed word searches, spot-the-difference games, creative projects to complete at home, and quizzes – all centred around water-saving tips and advice.
All activities were hosted within the AquaSmart web portal, which we crafted to be a vibrant and enjoyable space. This portal allows parents to easily navigate and download water-saving activities for Key Stage One children to complete at home, inspiring them to conserve water and protect the environment.
Results and Impact
Our work on AquaSmart has become an essential tool in South East Water’s commitment to developing a future-generation schools programme focused on water saving and use. The campaign and activities were successfully tested in schools across Kent during 2023, with plans underway to expand the campaign’s age range to Key Stage Two and beyond.
